  • Kathryn Stott (piano)

27th April 2014
Spanish Hall, Prague Castle

A Very Special Evening

Enjoy an exclusive concert by the phenomenal Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott – and much more besides. Wine, dine, and dance, and mix with leading figures from the worlds of culture and commerce. And all in the good cause of supporting the arts in Prague.

Yo-Yo Ma

With his genre-defying approach to music, the phenomenal American cellist Yo-Yo Ma brilliantly embodies the values of the Strings of Autumn festival. Those lucky enough to have witnessed his breathtaking last performance in Prague, some twenty years ago, will never forget it. Whether playing the classical repertoire, world music, or making tasteful forays into the world of pop, Ma is ever the humble master.
For guests of its 5th consecutive fundraising gala, Strings of Autumn has worked closely with Yo-Yo Ma to produce a unique programme for this special event, including pieces by Stravinsky, Villa-Lobos, Piazolla, and Dvořák. Yo-Yo Ma, sixteen times a Grammy award winner, will be accompanied in this classical recital by his long-time chamber music partner, the wonderful British pianist Kathryn Stott.

Spring Strings Gala

The 2014 Spring Strings is the fifth successive fundraising gala for Strings of Autumn. Vocal phenomenon Bobby McFerrin performed at the 2010 gala, and jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater took centre stage in 2011. In 2012, Dianne Reeves became the third consecutive multiple-Grammy-winning artist to appear at Spring Strings, and festival favourite Gregory Porter was the star in 2013.
All proceeds from ticket sales for the Spring Strings gala go to Strings of Autumn and aid the festival in its ongoing development.

The Strings of Autumn Festival

It is no exaggeration to say that Strings of Autumn has changed the cultural landscape of Prague in the 18 years since its inauguration.
The list of artists the festival has brought to Prague is as impressive as it is extensive – world-class performers such as Sonny Rollins, Natalie Dessay, Jordi Savall, Bobby McFerrin, Michael Nyman, Wayne Shorter, and Brad Mehldau. Strings of Autumn is proud to have brought many of its artists to Prague for their first-ever appearances in the Czech Republic.
Strings could not present these world-class artists without the help of corporate and private donors, whose support enables the festival to continue to bring the biggest names in jazz, classical, and experimental music to the finest venues in Prague.

Spanish Hall, Prague Castle

Commissioned by Emperor Rudolph II and built in 1602-06 to house his huge collection of statues, the Spanish Hall is a majestic space and a fitting venue for an artist of Yo-Yo Ma’s calibre.
